Jules Rimet, the father of the FIFA World Cup was born on this day in 1873

Jules Rimet

Rimet was President of FIFA from 1921-1954, and was the driving force behind the creation of the first FIFA World Cup in Uruguay in 1930.

The Jules Rimet Trophy (it was named after him in 1946) was replaced by the FIFA World Cup Trophy after Brazil won the tournament for the third time in 1970 and, in a rule stipulated by Rimet, were therefore allowed to keep it.
