Nigeria’s Minister of Health has commissioned the Jiddari Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC)

Nigeria’s Minister of Health has commissioned the Jiddari Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) located in Jere LGA, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria.
The centre had been abandoned for three years until UNICEF began working with the government to rehabilitate the center so it could be re-opened to serve both the host community of Jere, but also the influx of internally displaced persons forced to flee conflict and insecurity in northeast Nigeria. “UNICEF has been with the state, will continue with the state and remain in the state even after the situation improves,” said UNICEF’s Abdulkadir Musse at the occasion. Healthcare services in northeastern Nigeria have been heavily affected by the insurgency, but UNICEF is working to increase access to healthcare; the renovated primary healthcare centre can now provide free health and maternal care for 10,000 people, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Health workers at the centre address common diseases including malaria and acute respiratory infections, screen children for severe acute malnutrition, provide ante- and post-natal care for pregnant women, and provide routine immunization, including for measles, among other interventions.
