As we celebrate the World Pneumonia Day today, we remember the more than 200,000 Nigerian children who die from pneumonia every year.
Pneumonia is the second leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age in Nigeria. Indoor and outdoor pollution caused by use of firewood for cooking, burning of plastics and tyres among others are direct causes of pneumonia and other respiratory diseases in children. UNICEF through its integrated case management of childhood illnesses in Adamawa and Kebbi states supported by the European Union, has treated more than 30,000 cases of pneumonia in children. However, reducing indoor and outdoor air pollution will help reduce the incidence of the disease in children.
