Breaking News: World’s tallest bridge opens to traffic
A bridge suspended over a 565-meter gorge in a remote southwestern region of China has become the world’s highest bridge as it opened to traffic on Thursday.
The Beipanjiang Bridge, with a 720-meter main span across the Beipan River, is part of the highway running from the eastern coastal city of Hangzhou to southwestern city of Ruili at the China- Myanmar border.
Its four-lane roadway connects Xuanwei city in Yunnan Province and Liupanshui in Guizhou Province across the river, shortening the travel time between the two neighboring cities from a five-hour drive to one and a half hours.
More than 1,000 workers spent over three years constructing the bridge, which cost a total of 1.03 billion yuan (148 million US dollars).
