Kevin Starr spent his career breathing life into the history of California.
His contribution to the academic record is unquestioned and his service as State Librarian was a gift to the people of this state. It wasn't just his brilliant mind that made him shine, but his generosity with his ideas, which he gave away to anyone wise enough to listen. I will never be able to thank him enough for our enlightening conversations about California history and his always prescient advice. He was always there to lend an ear or offer guidance or historical context when I was Governor and I'm honored and grateful that I was able to continue our friendship and work together through the USC Schwarzenegger Institute until he left us.
Today, as we say goodbye to Professor Starr, the California Dream which filled him with such passion is stronger than ever. It is bittersweet that Kevin won't write the next chapter of our great state - he always saw the best in California, and I'll miss him dearly. But I know there is a legion of students he inspired who are ready to take up his pen, and it gives me great hope.
I join the rest of the USC community in sending my thoughts and prayers to his amazing wife and partner Sheila and the rest of Kevin's family and friends.
