Young girls happily waiting for classes to start at a secondary school.
Girls are more disadvantaged in access to education in parts of Nigeria. Educated girls become better mothers, have fewer, healthier children and want their children to have better educational opportunities. This means more girls enrolling, attending, staying in school and getting higher education in order to play greater productive social and economic roles within their families and communities. The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development is funding, through UNICEF, the Girls’ Education Project aimed at improving access, retention and completion of girls in education in 5 states.
