Fit grandpa! Zhang Quantong, 75, attracted crowds on the first day of the New Year, diving into chilly waters in Qingdao in eastern China’s Shandong Province.
For the past 14 years, Zhang has dived almost daily, usually about 100 times per day, and even more in the summer. That’s at least 20,000 dives per year, according to some calculations.
Known for his special diving pose, Zhang won the nickname “Diving grandpa” in 2008, when he dived 208 times in one day to welcome the Beijing Olympic Games, which also saw some events hosted in Qingdao.
He does it to stay fit, he says. And he’s not about to stop: “I get fit with this exercise, day in, day out. And I will keep it going until I die,” he told Qingdao Daily.
