8-meter high sculpture in Moscow

In Manezhnaya Square in Moscow, Russian artists are working on a large ice sculpture – eight meters high – to mark the upcoming Maslenitsa Festival.
Known as the Butter Week or Pancake Week, the festival is not only a traditional Slavic celebration in connection to Eastern Orthodox calendar, but also a way to bid farewell to winter and welcome spring back.
In pagan times, the festival prepared people for the Lent season as spring edged closer, but in modern times the celebration has crossed religious borders, being celebrated by many regardless of their religious beliefs.
The Moscow-based event is celebrated nationwide, with tourists joining the fun and delicacies from mid-February to early March.
