Sales of Apple products returned to growth in all regions except in Greater China, according to the company’s earning reports for the first quarter of 2017 released on Tuesday.
Sales in the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, stood at 16.2 billion US dollars, down 12 percent, in the quarter ending on December 31, 2016. Chief Executive Tim Cook conceded that there were challenges in China during a call with investors.
In 2016, Apple’s iPhone lost its spot as the most selling smartphone in China – the first time in five years – to homegrown Oppo R9. “Chinese consumers have shown a greater affinity to buy premium phones from local players,” Tarun Pathak, analyst at Counterpoint, told the media.
