School for Grannies helps Indian women fulfill lifetime dream of literacy

School for Grannies


Every morning, 90-year-old Sitabai Deshmukh gets dressed in a uniform of a bright pink sari, packs her satchel and heads to school.
Yes, the grandmother spends her days in a classroom along with 27 other women aged 60 to 90 in the small village of Phangane in Maharashtra state, India, a country where women are nearly a third less likely than men to be able to read and write.
