DRC President Joseph Kabila denies pledge to hold presidential polls this year

Congolese President Joseph Kabila maintains he never promised to hold elections in the DRC this year. This is an about-turn from a New Year's Eve agreement that presidential polls would take place later this year.
Speaking to reporters this weekend, Kabila says he wants elections to take place, but that they must be properly organised. He's added that the government is working on registering voters. Under a power-sharing agreement brokered by the Catholic Church in December, Kabila will remain in office until elections are held this year. His mandate ended in December. The opposition has repeatedly accused Kabila of delaying polls in order to remain in power.
