Ten people were killed in an explosion that broke out after a road accident involving an oil tanker in Osun state, southwest Nigeria, on Sunday, local police said on Monday.

The spokesman of the Osun State Police, Folasade Odoro, told Xinhua that two others injured in the incident.

According to her, a Toyota Hiace bus on a road trip from a nearby state sank into the oil tanker near the town of Ife in Osun State. This resulted in the contents of the tanker being spilled causing the explosion.

Odoro attributed the accident to excessive speed, noting that motorists in this axis often drive recklessly.

She stated that a formal investigation was under way to determine the cause of the accident.
