US President Donald Trump's UK state visit to take place next year

A state visit to Britain by US President Donald Trump will take place next year, Sky News quoted government sources as saying on Tuesday.

Trump's visit was expected this year after British Prime Minister Theresa May invited the US leader to Britain at her first meeting in January in Washington. But government officials often stated that no date had been set.
The government initially said the visit would be held later this year, but the media reported that the trip could be delayed for various reasons.

Downing Street sources admitted that the initial plan for a visit this summer was dropped.
Trump fell under fire from Britain for publicly criticizing London's Mayor Sadiq Khan's response to an attack by Islamist militants in London, in which eight people were killed.

Last month, the Guardian newspaper reported that Trump told May by phone that he did not want to come if there were likely large-scale demonstrations.

However, Trump said he would go to London if asked if the planned state visit was going ahead, during talks with May on the sidelines of the G20 summit last Saturday in Hamburg. He also suggested a rapid trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom.
