Five buses in South Korea’s capital Seoul installed statues depicting wartime sex slaves on Sunday.

The buses that take these still and silent “passengers” will operate from August 14 to September 30, passing by the Japanese embassy in Seoul.

It is meant to mark the Fifth International Memorial Day for Comfort Women on Monday, in an attempt to commemorate the women who were forced into sexual slavery during the Second World War by the Japanese invaders and to remind people of that very history.

An estimated 400,000 women and girls, and among that over 200,000 Chinese, were forced into sexual slavery during the Second World War, according to the Research Center for Chinese Comfort Women.
